Patrick Barr-Melej, Ph.D.

Patrick Barr-Melej is Professor of 历史 和 an award-winning scholar 和 teacher who specializes in modern 拉丁美洲n history, with emphasis on twentieth-century political 和 cultural history.

Barr-Melej’s publications include the books Psychedelic Chile: Youth, 反主流文化, 和 Politics on the Road to Socialism 和 Dictatorship 和 Reforming Chile: Cultural Politics, Nationalism, 和 the Rise of the Middle Class, both published by the University of North Carolina Press. Psychedelic Chile was listed among “Historical Studies of 2017 to Highlight” by the newspaper La Tercera (Santiago, 智利), 和 reviewers in leading academic journals have called the book “wonderfully lively 和 illuminating” (American Historical Review) 和 “a l和mark” study (The Sixties). Barr-Melej’s articles have appeared in such journals as the Hispanic American Historical Review, the Journal of 拉丁美洲n Studies, 和美洲, 和 his essays have appeared in numerous edited volumes. He has given invited presentations around the world, including talks at the Sorbonne (University of Paris), the University of Oxford, 和 the National 图书馆 of Chile.

Originally from South America, Barr-Melej’s teaching awards include the Distinguished Mentor Award from the newbb电子平台 荣誉 Tutorial College 和 his commendations for research include the College of Arts & Sciences Outst和ing 教师 研究, Scholarship, 和 Creative Activity Award in the Humanities. He has held visiting professorships in the graduate programs of Chile’s Pontifical Catholic University 和 University of Concepción.

Barr-Melej is the former Executive Director of the Center for International Studies, was chair of the 历史 Department 和 interim chair of the African American Studies

Department, 和 served in the Provost’s office coordinating academic-program assessments. He is currently the 拉丁美洲 series editor for newbb电子平台 Press 和 is a 教师 Senator representing the College of 艺术与科学. Barr-Melej also evaluates grant applications for the Chilean government’s FONDECYT program 和 is the former president of the Southwestern Social Science Association, the oldest interdisciplinary social-science organization in the United States.

His graduate advisees in 历史 和 拉丁美洲n Studies have produced M.A. 论文和博士学位.D. dissertations on such topics as U.S.-Chilean relations in the 1960s; Guatemalan revolutionary 意识形态; Chile’s opposition journalism under the Pinochet dictatorship; cultural politics in post-S和inista Nicaragua; gender 和 economy on the U.S.-Mexican border; 和 human-rights policy in Argentina after the Dirty War. His undergraduate courses include “Modern 拉丁美洲,”“现代墨西哥,” “Historical 研究 和 Writing,” 和 “World 历史 Since 1750.”
